Citizenship
To obtain Australian citizenship you must have lived in Australia for four years, including the last 12 months as a Permanent Resident.
- hold a permanent visa, or are a ‘protected SCV’ holder under the Social Security Act 1991
- meet the residence requirement
- are of good character if you are 18 years of age or older.
Eligible protected SCV holders include those who:
- were in Australia on 26 February 2001 on a Special Category Visa (SCV); or
- were in Australia for 12 months in the 2 years immediately before this date; or
- have been assessed as protected SCV holders (have a Centrelink certificate stating that they were living in Australia on a particular date).
Usually, unless you have been granted another type of visa, on your arrival in Australia and when you present your New Zealand passport, you will automatically be granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444). It is a temporary visa that lets you stay and work in Australia. It is not a permanent residence visa.
Fee $285 unless you are eligible for concession.
